The Do’s and Don’ts of Countertop Cleaning

A beautiful countertop can be the focal point of your kitchen, so you want to keep it looking like new. It only takes a few basic maintenance steps to keep your countertop clean, but ignoring these steps could lead to permanent staining, mold, and mildew. If you have a granite, marble, or other natural stone countertop, following these basic care instructions will keep them looking like new for years to come.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Countertop Cleaning
  • Use a mild soap or pH neutral cleaner along with a clean, dry cloth or microfiber towel to clean your countertops.

  • Too much soap or cleaner can leave streaks. If this happens, use warm water and a clean sponge or cloth.

  • Clean up spills immediately to prevent staining, especially colored foods and liquids such as wine, spices, and food coloring, and acidic substances such as vinegar.

  • Use a cutting board or other surfaces during food prep.

  • Use a clean cloth to mop up any water around your kitchen sink or stovetop. Water left on your natural stone countertop can lead to mold and mildew.

  • Use harsh chemical cleaners or cleaners containing citrus, vinegar, bleach, or other acidic substances. Harsh and acidic substances can wear away your countertop’s seal and weaken the integrity of the stone.

  • Use scouring pads, powder-based cleaners, or other abrasives to clean your countertop. This can damage the surface and lead to staining.

  • Place hot items such as pots, pans, or crock pots directly on your natural stone surface. These can discolor your countertop. Placing hot material onto quartz or natural stone can lead to fissures, cracks, discoloration, or warping.

  • Forget to clean the corners and edges, especially where your countertop meets the wall or backsplash. These areas are particularly vulnerable to mold and mildew.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Countertop Cleaning

Remember that no two materials are the same. It’s important to research the material of your stone countertop to understand the best steps for its care and maintenance.
