Our History

The history of Bloomday Granite begins with the founder’s grandfather, Fred Day Cooke. After years of working with stone as part of Depression-era building projects, Fred Cooke and his wife, Nonnie Bloom Cooke, settled down to start a family in Stanleyville, North Carolina. He founded his own small business, Cooke and Mabe Monuments, which sold building stone, headstones, and engraved memorials. Their son, Frederick Stephens Cooke, continued to work at Cooke and Mabe Monuments alongside his wife, Beverlie.

Frederick Stephens Cooke, Jr. decided to take the family stone business in a different direction; electing to focus on countertops instead of memorials. In 2002, he started Bloomday Granite & Marble as a way of continuing the family tradition of working in the stone industry. He named the company to honor his grandparents: Nonnie Bloom Cooke and Fred Day Cooke. Twenty successful years would follow, as the team at Bloomday Granite & Marble worked to build a legacy worthy of carrying the family name.

In mid-2021 the winds of change began to stir in Cooke’s heart again as he sought out a new path. Cooke soon found a new owner for his family business in the face of a friendly competitor located in nearby Mount Airy, NC. Joining forces with Johnson Granite, Inc. was a logical move; aligning two family-owned businesses with more than 100 years of combined experience in the stone business. Now, Bloomday Granite & Marble works as one of three locations for Johnson Granite, now operating as "Johnson Granite, Inc.- Winston-Salem" or JGI South as our Winston-Salem Team likes to call it.
